Why you should remove mold from your home (and what happens if you wait)

Black mold growing on a surface in a home

If you smell dampness in a corner of your home and ignore it, in two weeks that smell can become a health problem. Mold doesn't stay still: it grows, spreads and releases spores into the air you breathe. In Orlando and Kissimmee, with the humidity we have almost all year, this happens more than people think.

What mold is and why it shows up

Mold is a fungus that lives in the environment. Its spores float in the air, get into your home through doors, windows and the A/C, and need only one thing to settle: moisture. As the EPA puts it, «the key to mold control is moisture control.»

«The key to mold control is moisture control.» — EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home

That means the problem is almost never the mold itself. The problem is the water that stayed where it shouldn't: a slow leak, a dripping roof, an A/C with a clogged drain line, a flood that was dried halfway. If you don't stop that source, no matter what you clean, the mold comes back.

24 to 48 hours: the window almost no one respects

The EPA is clear: if wet areas or materials are not dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold starts to grow. We're not talking weeks. We're talking a weekend.

In Central Florida this gets worse because the air is already loaded with humidity. A floor that «looks dry» can hide water underneath, and mold shows up where you don't see it: behind the drywall, under the floor, in the closet, inside the ducts.

How mold affects your health

Mold produces allergens and irritants, and in some cases substances that can be toxic. The CDC explains that exposure to damp and moldy environments can cause nasal stuffiness, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes or skin irritation. In people with asthma it can trigger attacks, and in people with a weak immune system the risk is higher.

«The most important effects are increased prevalences of respiratory symptoms, allergies and asthma as well as perturbation of the immunological system.» — WHO, Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould (2009)

Not everyone reacts the same. The Florida Department of Health notes that babies and children, older adults and people with allergies, asthma or a weak immune system are affected fastest.

Where it hides (even when you can't see it)

  • Behind drywall, wallpaper or paneling.
  • On top of ceiling tiles and under carpets or pads.
  • Around pipes that drip or condense inside walls.
  • Behind furniture, where air doesn't circulate.
  • Inside air conditioning ducts.

What NOT to do

  • Don't paint or seal over mold: the moisture stays and it comes back.
  • Don't mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners: it produces toxic gas.
  • Don't use ozone generators to «clean the air».
  • Don't scrub contaminated surfaces without protection (gloves, goggles, N-95).

When to call a professional

The EPA and the Florida Department of Health agree on a practical rule: if mold covers more than 10 square feet, or if there was a lot of water damage, you need a professional. The problem is the real size is almost never what you see.

How we remove it at Eco Prime

  1. Inspection and detection. We find the mold, how far it spread and the moisture source.
  2. Containment. We isolate the area so spores don't spread.
  3. HEPA filtration. We filter the air during the work.
  4. Removal and disinfection. We remove contaminated material and disinfect surfaces.
  5. Verification. We confirm the area is clean and moisture is under control.

The decision you shouldn't delay

You can wait and look the other way. Most likely the smell stays, the stain grows and your family's health starts to notice. Or you can deal with it today, while it's still a moisture problem and not a health problem.

Tell us what smells, where you notice it and since when; we measure, contain and remove. And if you prefer a call, we answer any hour, 365 days a year.

Call now or send the form. The sooner we start, the less material has to be removed and the less it costs.
